Sacred Bark is a plant of the Rhamnaceae family, which is native from America. Its name comes from the false belief that this plant was in fact a tree and that its bark had been used to build Noah’s Ark. The active part of this plant is the bark, very rich in hydroxyanthracenic glycosides, mainly glucosylanthrones and glycosides. Among which, we find cascarosides which are the physiologically active substances. It also contains anthraquinone and anthrone.
Traditionally, Sacred Bark has been used as a short-action laxative (in cases of occasional constipation). Its properties are based in the ability of these substances to modify their structure in the large intestine thanks to breakage of molecules and to the activity of intestinal flora. This metabolic action helps increase peristaltic movement (typical from the intestines) and an increase water and electrolytes secretion from the mucosa to the outside, favoring the bowel movement.
Sacred Bark (Rhamnus purshianus DC.) cortex dry extract, standardized to 6% cascarosides: 200 mg.
1 or 2 capsules daily, with a glass of water.
Do not use in cases of intestinal blockage, lethargy and colon diseases, as well as in children under 10 years.
Occasionally, Sacred Bark can cause abdominal pain and spasms.
It is recommended not to take it during more than a week without a specialist’s supervision.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It is advisable not to take during the first trimester of pregnancy or during lactation.
