Agaricus blazei Murill is a fungus native to the mountainous regions of the da mata atlantica do sul of the State of Sao Paolo, in the city of Piedade (Colauto et al. 2002). In the 60s, Japanese epidemiologists studying the native population of Piedade, observed that the rate of disease in that region was extremely low. After analysing their daily habits, it was discovered that there was a correlation between the regular consumption of this fungus, identified in 1972 as Agaricusblazei Murill, and low incidences of disease. The latter experiments carried out with mice in Japan, verified that this fungus produced an activation of the immune system that was significantly greater than that produced by Shiitake, Maitake, Reishi and other fungi considered “medicinal”.
